About holidays and dates

Some holidays are tied to a number and never move: New Year is always 1 January. Others follow a rule — Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November, and Easter is worked out by a formula of its own. A third group depends on the lunar calendar, and their dates differ by a day between countries. A fourth kind sits in the calendar, but the day is appointed by a school or a city — holidays, graduation night, the last bell. Hence the badges in the catalogue, «approximate» for lunar dates and «estimated» for school ones, and the year-by-year table on every holiday page.

Fixed dates

Simple
1 January · 8 March
Tied to a day and a month. Only the weekday changes from year to year — and that is what the holiday page shows you.

Dates by rule

Computed
4th Thursday of November
Set by a rule rather than a number: «the last Sunday», «the fourth Thursday», «the Saturday after 15 September». The date differs every year, yet it is unambiguous.

Easter

Formula
Computus
Worked out by a dedicated algorithm and differing between Orthodox and Catholic traditions: the gap reaches five weeks, and some years they coincide. Maslenitsa, Palm Sunday, Trinity and Lent are counted from Easter.

Lunar holidays

Approximate
Ramadan · Eid al-Adha
They depend on the lunar calendar and on sighting the moon, so the date differs by a day between countries. Such dates are flagged as approximate and published as a table covering several years.

Estimated dates

Estimated
Holidays · graduation
The date exists, but a school or a city sets it: the last bell, graduation night, school holidays, Scarlet Sails. What you see here is the ministry recommendation and common practice — check the exact day with your own school, and the page offers a shortcut to your own date.

Day off or not

Russia
8 official
Eight dates are public holidays in Russia; the rest are celebrated on working days. Each holiday says which it is. Day-swaps are not counted — they are approved anew every year.

Long weekends

Planning
3–4 days in a row
When a holiday sits next to a Saturday and Sunday, you get a run of three days off or more. The holiday page works it out from the calendar, without official day-swaps.

Frequently asked questions

Open the page of the holiday you need — the counter shows days, hours, minutes and seconds left until midnight on your device clock. Next to it you get the date this year and next, the weekday it falls on, the working days remaining and how many Mondays, Fridays and other weekdays are still ahead, which is what you need when you plan in weeks. The catalogue shows the same at a glance, tile by tile.
